Sweet success for Sheffield Sharks
At the end of one of the most competitive campaigns in years, I’m so pleased to say that the British basketball season ended on a real high for us.

It was a challenging season with several player changes and losing guys to injuries, and we came to the BBL Play-Off final very much as the underdogs.

We knew the Leicester Riders were a strong, athletic team and ready to put up a good fight. And playing in front of 13,000 fans at the O2 in London really raised the stakes.

However, we played with energy, found our rhythm and moved the ball well.

The Riders played a good game and challenged us throughout, but we controlled the game and the points we scored, making six three-pointers in the second quarter certainly gave us confidence.

It was a close match and we only took the lead 73-71 with 4:14 minutes remaining. A decisive push late in the fourth quarter saw us pull out a great win scoring 84-77 overall.

This win is a real testament to the team’s commitment throughout the season. We’ve worked hard to develop our game and climb up the table, and such success seemed a long way off in November.

The team really wants to inspire young people to pick up a ball and enjoy basketball and hopefully we can grow some future stars from our own back yard!

Being voted the most valuable player is a great feeling, particularly because I know that in England traditionally winning the league is the most significant thing, but back in Canada and America, the championship game in the Play-Offs is the biggest thing. This was a title I hadn’t won and this is probably my sweetest victory.

We’re really excited to be moving into the Park Community Arena, our new home at the Olympic Legacy Park. Not only will we then be working with world-class researchers at the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre to improve our performance further, but it will also give us the opportunity to play next door to children studying at Oasis Academy Don Valley and University Technical College OLP Campus.  We are here to show them that if you apply and believe in yourselves then you can achieve anything!
