Look North to the Sheffield Celebration of Sport
As a sports presenter, I feel very lucky to meet a lot of talented athletes on a day to day basis. But it’s not every day that we get to celebrate their incredible achievements at one big event.
That’s why it’s a real privilege to be hosting Sheffield’s Celebration of Sport gala dinner on Wednesday 5 October.
What greater way to honour sporting talent than getting them all together to show how proud we are of their accomplishments? It will be wonderful to welcome the multitude of Olympians, Paralympians, past, present and future athletes that are due to attend this unique event.
I spend a lot of my time in Yorkshire and the people I meet are always down to earth and determined. It’s that hard working attitude that has undoubtedly helped all of these athletes get to where they are today.
The Sheffield City Region in particular has produced some incredible sporting stars over the years, no doubt down to the world class coaches and outstanding facilities available in the city. Venues such as the English Institute of Sport Sheffield, iceSheffield and Ponds Forge provide athletes in the area with a great place to train and hone their skills.
With the likes of Paralympic gold medallist, Will Bayley, Rio silver medallist, Bryony Page and professional boxer, Johnny Nelson all set to attend the dinner, it’s clear that a diverse range of sporting stars have come from this  city.
The grassroots awards that will be presented on the evening are also a lovely idea. It’s important to nurture the raw talent in these rising stars and I’m sure in years to come we’ll be seeing some of them take their turns at the Olympic Games.
Plus, with the development of the Olympic Legacy Park in Sheffield bringing world-class sports, education, health and leisure facilities to the city, there will be many opportunities for new talent across South Yorkshire to develop their sporting prowess.
